Partnering with cohealth, this Melbourne-based program will train young people of colour (aged 18-35) in all aspects of social change – everything from strategy, leadership and political engagement to digital, communications and fundraising.
Over five months, Fellows attend three residential retreats, engage in fortnightly workshop intensives, connect with experienced campaigners of colour for mentoring, and start their own community campaigns.
What You’ll Learn
This first-of-its-kind training program equips young people of colour leaders with the campaigning and leadership skills to change hearts, minds, public policy and corporate behaviour.
Organised and delivered by people of colour, this in-depth program covers everything you’d need to know to be an effective change-maker, including: leadership, strategy, issue/corporate/electoral campaigning, political engagement, messaging & framing, media, public speaking, digital campaigning, organising, fundraising, First Nations’ justice, structural racism, and more.
Through retreats, workshops, inspiring speakers, discussion groups and mentoring, Fellows will leave with the skills and resources to create positive change. Plus, as part of the program, they’ll get the opportunity to run their own community campaign on an issue they care about.
We want to make this Fellowship accessible to everyone who wants to participate regardless of their financial status. That’s why:
- This Fellowship is free to participate in
- For each workshop and retreat, an honorarium of $20 is provided to each Fellow to cover travel (totalling $260 across the ten workshops and three retreats)
In addition, as part of creating their own community campaign, Fellows will be employed casually in campaign co-design sessions (for 15 hours at $35/hour for a total of $525). There will also be the opportunity to get paid to facilitate your own community workshops on a topic you learnt in the Fellowship.
Logistics & Key Dates
To get the most out of the Fellowship, you will be required to commit to:
- 10 evening workshops split over July 2019 to November 2019. The exact days will be confirmed based off the availability of the cohort.
- Opening retreat: July 19-21
- Mid-Fellowship retreat: September 28-29
- Closing retreat: December 6-8
It is important that participants are able to attend all workshops and retreats. This commitment is vital to achieving the full skill development offered by the program. After applying, please mark the above dates in your calendar.
Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to a short interview. We anticipate these will be held July 12-15.
This program is Melbourne based (although we hope to offer it around the country soon).

The program’s core and guest facilitators are social movement leaders who bring decades of experience to the Fellowship. All retreats and workshops are designed and run by campaigners of colour from a variety of spaces, including the union, environment, social justice and human rights movements.
This Fellowship is being organised by Democracy in Colour and cohealth.
Democracy in Colour is Australia’s first racial and economic justice organisation led by people of colour. We run campaigns tackling structural racism, empower people of colour to shape the policy discussions that affect our lives, and build the capacity of our communities.
cohealth is an independent not for profit organisation. cohealth’s mission is to improve health and wellbeing for all and tackle inequality, in partnership with people and the communities they live in.
