National anti-racist organisation Democracy in Colour stands in deep solidarity with Australian Jewish communities against the antisemitic mass shooting on the first night of Hanukkah that has claimed the lives of 16 people, including a 10 year old. Antisemitism, racism, violence and hate have no place in our communities nor in the future we are trying to build together.
We share in the shock and grief of those affected. We reject all forms of racism and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every person, of every faith and ethnic background, can live in safety and dignity. We warn against bad faith actors attempting to use this tragic incident to further stoke division, fear and hate against minorities.
We commend the bravery and heroism of ordinary citizens such as Ahmed El Ahmed, a father of two, who acted swiftly and selflessly to successfully disarm one of the offenders, saving many lives. It is clear that our safety is intertwined and we are stronger when we stand together to protect and defend our shared humanity.
Democracy in Colour demands full transparency from the police, and an inquiry into the police response. We further demand that the mainstream media report responsibly and with accuracy. In times of crises, the way stories are framed can either heal a community or create further division and harm. We call for accurate journalism that prioritises truth over clicks.
Lastly, we demand that our State and Federal Government prioritise racism as a national issue that threatens the safety and security of all Australians, and provide an adequate response that addresses the structural and systemic root causes of racism and religious intolerance on this continent. We need an overarching approach that includes all forms of racial, social and economic justice and guarantees dignity, safety and freedom for all.
