Victorian Organiser

LOCATION: Victoria 

YOUR COMMITMENT: 5 hours a week (flexibly distributed around existing life, work, etc. commitments).

REPORTS TO:  Organising Director

This is a volunteer role. Reimbursements available for associated expenses.

Key Responsibilities

As the VIC State Organiser, you’ll be a core part of the Democracy in Colour team in VIC – contributing to the design and implementation of campaign plans, developing engagement strategies and building relationships that strengthen the political power of communities of colour in VIC . This includes:

VIC strategy development and implementation

  • Execute an ambitious, high impact, well researched VIC strategy that builds power for communities of colour, aligns with our theory of change and reflects current social, political and economic realities
  • Work with State Directors and Organisers to implement national campaigns for the VIC context
  • Support leaders in the community and action groups with developing local campaigns and implementing national campaigns

Team management

  • Develop an impact-focussed, innovative, data-driven, low ego and fun culture where leadership is shared and everyone has significant freedom and real responsibility
  • Provide leadership in creating an organisational culture of anti-oppression
  • Participate in creating a strong team culture that is inclusive and engaging and regularly participate in state and national meetings and catch ups.
  • Raise opportunities and concerns with State Directors immediately

Engagement and outreach

  • Actively seek out strategic opportunities to engage and support communities of colour in VIC
  • Be the first point of contact for new volunteers and members in VIC
  • Identify leaders and support them through Democracy in Colour’s supporter journey
  • Coordinate regular one on one check in’s with Democracy in Colour action groups and community leaders
  • Implement processes to ensure that activists and leaders in VIC are supported in an ongoing way
  • Report on the ongoing performance of lead activists and action groups and ensure that their engagement is tracked in Democracy in Colour’s database
  • Keep up to date on political trends in VIC specifically affecting communities of colour, conduct research and prepare background/briefing documents where necessary

Stakeholder management

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with decision makers, partner organisations, funders and other stakeholders in VIC
  • Develop partnerships and coalitions in VIC that position Democracy in Colour as an ally and key player across the racial justice movement

Organisational leadership

  • Implement growth plans of our VIC membership in both depth and breadth
  • Represent Democracy in Colour at public engagements and events in VIC
  • Embody steward leadership – make decisions that always advance the priorities of our membership

Technical skills, experience and knowledge

  • Strong grasp of strategy
  • Understanding of racial justice theory and the politics around race/racism in Australia
  • Experience with creative, effective grassroots and/or digital campaigning
  • Strong organisational and people leadership skills
  • Natural affinity for partnership and coalition building
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and communities, including the ability to build diverse coalitions and consensus
  • Strong written and oral communication skills – the ability to convey complex issues in simple, engaging terms that make sense to everyday people, grab attention and inspire participation
  • Strong skills in networking, diplomacy, influencing, negotiation and conflict mediation
