Noura is an experienced strategist, community organiser and educator with a background in politics and education. Noura has been working in civil society organisations on community development, policy, advocacy and solidarity for over 20 years, locally and internationally. Her lived experience as a Palestinian woman drives her passion and commitment for racial justice and systemic change.

Shae

Digital Organising Lead, she/they

Shae is a digital campaigner and community organiser from South Africa, and has worked professionally in progressive campaigning in both Australia and Ireland. They have achieved impact across a range of campaigns including Covid-19 health response, online privacy, maternity leave provisions and education reform. Shae is particularly passionate about the power of ordinary people to advocate for change. Shae holds a Bachelor of Communication and Masters in Comparative Social Change, with a research focus on feminist and anti-racist practice in activist spaces.

Aliya

Media Advisor, she/her

Aliya is a media campaigner with extensive experience in shifting media narratives on issues of economic and racial inequality. She's previously worked as a media advisor for the Victorian peak body for homelessness and is currently the Associate Director at the Economic Media Centre. She sits on the board of Switchboard Victoria and the National Media Engagement Advisory Group for Media Making Change at OurWatch.

Karen Kandur

Karen Kandur

Board Member, she/her, Treasurer of the Board

Karen is an experienced Chief Operating Officer, currently working at Environmental Leadership Australia and as the Director and Treasurer of Australian Progress. She has been the Chief Operating Officer of ActionAid Australia and Chief Financial Officer with Opportunity International Australia. She is a Chartered Accountant and has a Masters in International Development from University of New South Wales and an Executive Masters in Business Administration from the Australian Catholic University.

Anita Tang

Board Member, Chair of the Board, she/her

Anita has an extensive background in policy, advocacy, campaigning and community organising with a particular passion for people-powered change for communities who are made invisible, ignored or oppressed by our public policies and systems. She currently works for Australian Progress as the Community Organising Director, and is the Chair of the Board of CHOICE as well as Democracy in Colour.

Jamal Hakim

Jamal Hakim

Board Member, he/him, Secretary of the Board

Jamal is the Managing Director of the not-for-profit health and reproductive rights service MSI Australia. In 2020, Jamal was elected as a Councillor for the City of Melbourne. He currently holds several board appointments, including MS Health Pty Ltd, Marie Stopes PNG and Democracy in Colour.

Alan Wu

Alan Wu

Board Member, he/him

Alan is a not-for-profit corporate governance specialist, working with communities to build power to make decisions that matter. He currently also serves as chair of Australia’s largest youth-run international development organisation, Oaktree, and on the boards of the Victorian Pride Centre and GetUp!. Alan has previously served on the board of Oxfam Australia, as an Envoy for Young People to the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, and on the Australian National Commission for UNESCO. Alan is admitted as a lawyer to the Supreme Court of the ACT, and a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia and the Chartered Governance Institute.
