Albanese and Dutton show complete disregard for multicultural communities.
National racial justice organisation, Democracy in Colour, has slammed the Albanese government for rushing three regressive migration bills through parliament late last night, showing complete disregard for concerns raised by multicultural communities across the country.
Democracy in Colour Campaigner, Jarrod Tan says:
“The three migration Bills that Labor pushed through last night showed complete disregard for the genuine concerns raised by communities and legal experts across the country. This is an affront to the many community leaders who spoke out about the impacts on their communities during the inquiry process.
“The bills passed last night are a throwback to decades of racist, shameful, illegal and inhumane persecution of refugees and asylum seekers motivated by short-term election prospects of politicians in this country.
“By teaming up with the Dutton opposition to pass these bills the Albanese Labor government has demonstrated that it is willing to sacrifice the support of diverse communities across the country in exchange for some political capital.
“The cruelty enacted through these bills will have far-reaching and unintended consequences for families and people owed this country’s protection for decades.
“The limited debate and scrutiny of such significant pieces of legislation is something that I would have expected from the Howard era of refugee scapegoating and hysteria. By rushing these bills through parliament, the Albanese government has demonstrated that it has just as much disregard for people in need.
“The Albanese government has underestimated the power of diverse and multicultural communities across the country. The makeup of this country’s electorate is more diverse and politically engaged than it has ever been. This continued racist electioneering is no longer a winning strategy.
“Cruelty is a choice. We have an opportunity to be a more humane and empathetic society, yet our political leaders seem too concerned with their own re-election to understand this. They can and should do better.” he said.
