In 2017, Democracy in Colour campaigned within our communities to vote “yes” on the Marriage Equality plebescite.
We organised with religious and cultural leaders to have conversations in their own communities on the importance of LGBTQ+ rights. We trained LGBTQ+ people of colour to campaign against the dominate media narrative that inaccurately painted our cultures as “incompatible” with LGBTQ+ rights.
As a result, the diverse and complex experiences of LGBTQ+ people of colour were amplified.
In 2020, Democracy in Colour successfully campaigned with other organisations for income support for 1 million temporary visa holders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was a direct response to the Federal Government who left out people holding temporary visas in their Jobseeker and Jobkeeper packages.
The campaign pushed 15 councils and the states of NSW, Victoria, ACT, Tasmania and Queensland to roll out support programs.
Democracy in Colour has successfully campaigned to deplatform public figures who have a history of perpetuating racist hate speech on television about our communities.
This includes Sam Newman resignation from the Footy Show and axing Pauline Hanson regular spot from Channel 9.
