Our vision of a society that honours the dignity of everyone is facing a relentless barrage of attacks.
We’re tearing our planet apart: hurtling towards a climate crisis, overshooting our planet’s bio-capacity, and driving extinction levels to heights not seen in millions of years. We have an economic system that prioritises the interests of a tiny elite at the perpetual expense of everyone else. And our democracy is being held hostage by the disproportionate influence of big business, vested interests and money in politics.
And yet civil society and advocacy organisations often struggle to build campaigns that are commensurate with the size of the threat.
OUR MOVEMENTS ARE NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH.
We rarely reach the scale of people we need to organise. We have difficulty engaging impacted communities. And we struggle to build real broad-based constituencies.
At the same time, Australian civil society has severely underinvested in training and supporting impacted communities. There are incredible people of colour and First Nations activists working on grassroots campaigns without credible resourcing — no salary, no training opportunities, no support structure. And the result? Burnout and exhaustion.
To build the power we need to tackle our moment’s critical challenges, we need to expand our movements and bring new communities into them. And the only way we can do that is if our organisations are reflective of the communities that are most impacted by the issues we work on.
THE PEOPLE OF COLOUR PLACEMENT PROGRAM
That’s why we launched the People of Colour Placement Program: Australia’s first ten month on-the-job training program for emerging campaigners of colour.
The program provides a ten month paid traineeship in an established NGO alongside an in-depth training and mentoring program. Training comprises three immersive retreats, weekly support meetings, fortnightly workshop intensives, inspiring speakers, discussion groups, mentoring and networking. It’s an in-depth program that covers all aspects of campaigning — everything from strategy, leadership and political engagement to digital, communications and fundraising.
Participants will leave with the campaigning and leadership skills to run effective campaigns to change hearts, minds, public policy and corporate behaviour. And placement organisations will gain a smart, creative, strategic campaigner who expands their campaigns, builds a stronger organisational culture, engages new communities, and builds new power.
And one of the most exciting parts? Professional development is built into the traineeships: participants work four days per week within their placement organisation, and spend the remaining one day per week participating in training.
