URGENT: Reject the Character Test Online Calling Party
The Migration and Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening Information Provisions) Bill has just passed the lower house. If passed through the Senate, it will make it harder for people to challenge visa cancellations or deportations, even when the Government has acted unfairly or made a mistake. This threatens the rule of law.
If passed, the Government will be able to:
- Refuse giving information to the high court on migration cases
- Cancel visa without the person knowing why, on what evidence this was based
- Prevent people from contesting deportation or indefinite detention based on information that may be wrong, maliciously planted or misinterpreted.
- Prevents parliamentary committees from having oversight of the way these laws are implemented.
The Morrison government reintroduced a bill that could result in the deportation of thousands of people, separate them from their families and deeply traumitise vulnerable people.
For a safer and more inclusive community, let’s invest in mental health services, drug and alcohol support, and end migrant labour exploitation.
